Artist Educator – Freelance Role

Find Your Talent Artist-in-Residence-in-School Project
The Creative Foundation is looking to appoint two Artist Educators to work in two Shepway schools. The in-school artist-in-residence programme will enable students and teachers to develop fresh approaches to understanding contemporary art, helping to broaden students’ critical thinking and creative skills.
The experienced Artist Educator will develop a programme with the teacher at the school to provide high quality cultural experiences and the necessary tools for students to become informed spectators, participants and creators. The Artist Educator will be asked to use the emerging themes from the 2011 Folkestone Triennial as a starting point. With the work produced you and the other Artist-Educator will plan and deliver an exhibition.
The Artist Educator must be a practising artist with experience of working with children.
An up-to-date CRB check is essential. Knowledge of Key Stage 3 and 4 in Art and Design with an understanding of the Folkestone area is desirable.
The project begins at the end of September 2010 and is due to be complete by
mid-November.
Artist Educators Fee £3500 – this comprises of approx 22 days in total. 18 days in school,
2 planning days and 2 exhibition days.

Background Information
The Creative Foundation is a charity working to regenerate the coastal town of Folkestone, Kent through the arts, the creative industries and education. The Creative Foundation provides artists and creative businesses with studio, retail and live-work spaces in newly refurbished buildings in Folkestone’s Old Town, now known as the Creative Quarter. The Creative Quarter is also home to the newly established University Centre Folkestone and The Cube adult education centre. The Creative Foundation organises a year-round programme of arts events and festivals. In March 2009, the Creative Quarter opened Quarterhouse, a performing arts centre located within the Creative Quarter that provides a home to many of these festivals, as well as an ongoing programme of events.
Every three years, The Creative Foundation organises the Folkestone Triennial, a major exhibition of contemporary art presenting new works by leading international artists in public spaces and unusual locations around Folkestone. Eight of the 2008 artworks remain in the town permanently. The next Folkestone Triennial takes place from June-September 2011.
Shepway Find Your Talent is a 2 1/2 year Pathfinder project being run by The Creative Foundation in partnership with Kent County Council and a range of other partners. It is one of ten national Pathfinders commissioned by the government across England. The project aims to improve dramatically access to cultural and creative activities for children and young people across the district of Shepway. The project is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Arts Council England and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
